Glossary

The Madam President Game© uses many keywords and terms about the political process, community involvement, leadership, and more.  Below is a glossary of terms that players might find helpful.

Ability (noun)
The power or capacity to do or act physically, mentally, legally, morally, financially, etc; competence in an activity or occupation because of one's skill, training, or other qualification; abilities, talents; special skills or aptitudes.

Advice (noun)
An opinion or recommendation offered as a guide to action, conduct, etc; an official notification, especially one pertaining to a business agreement.


Ambassadors (noun) ​
A diplomatic official of the highest rank, sent by one sovereign or state to another as its resident representative; a diplomatic official of the highest rank sent by a government to represent it on a temporary mission, as for negotiating a treaty.

Armed Forces (noun)
Military, naval, and air forces, especially of a nation or of a number of nations.

Cabinet (noun)
An advisory body to the President, consisting of the heads of the thirteen executive departments of the federal government.

Campaign (noun)
The competition by rival political candidates and organizations for public office.

Campaign Rally (noun)
A planned event for a candidate usually attended by her supporters.

Ceremonial Assistant (noun)
Someone who attends official events in the place of a superior.

Character (noun)
Having qualities of honesty, courage, and integrity.

Commitment (noun)
Staying true to a pledge, promise or obligation.

Community (noun)
A social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government, and often have a common cultural and historical heritage.

Confident (adjective)
To be sure of oneself; having no uncertainty about one's own abilities, correctness, successfulness, etc.

Creative (adjective)
Resulting from originality of thought or expression; imaginative.

Debate (noun)
A formal contest in which the affirmative and negative sides of a proposal are advocated by opposing speakers.

Delegate (verb)
To send or appoint someone as deputy or representative, or to perform functions.

Diplomacy (noun)
Skill in managing negotiations and handling people so that there is little or no ill will; tact.

Discouraging (verb)
To deprive of courage, hope, or confidence.

Donation (noun)
An act or instance of presenting something as a gift, grant, or contribution.

Empathetic (adjective)
The identification with the feelings, thoughts,or attitudes of others.

Endorsement (noun)
Approval and support.

Enforcing (verb)
To put or keep in force; compel obedience.

Executive Departments (noun)
Groups of persons having administrative or supervisory authority in an organization.

Experience (noun)
Knowledge or practical wisdom gained from what one has observed, encountered, or undergone.

Expressing Ideas (verb/noun)
​To set forth the opinions, feelings, etc., as in speaking, writing, or painting.

Financial Matters (noun)
Having to do with money.

Foreign (adjective)
​Relating to, or derived from another country or nation; not native.

Foreign Affairs (adjective/noun)
Relating to contact or dealings with other countries.

Forgiving (verb)
To grant pardon to a person.

Generous (adjective)
Liberal in giving or sharing; unselfish.

Good Citizen (adjective/noun)
Someone who does the right thing for the good of the community.

Government Strategy (noun)
The use of science or art to develop and implement programs.

Honorary (adjective)
Holding a title or position conferred for honor only.

Identify (verb)
To recognize or establish as being a particular person or thing.

Inspired (verb)
To produce a feeling or thought.

Integrity (noun)
Adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty.

Interrupt (verb)
To stop a person in the midst of doing or saying something, especially by an interjected remark.

Judges (noun)
Public officers authorized to hear and decide cases in a court of law.

Learning (noun)
The act or process of acquiring knowledge or skill.

Long Term Goals (adjective/noun)
The result or achievement toward which effort is directed, with future results in mind.

Mentor (noun)
An influential senior sponsor or supporter.

NOW (acronym)
A word formed from the first letters of the National Organization for Women.

Opponent (noun)
A person who is on an opposing side in a game, contest, controversy, or the like; adversary.

Organized (noun)
To systematize.

Perspective (noun)
Being able to see all the relevant data in a meaningful relationship.

Polls (noun)
A sampling or collection of opinions on a subject, taken from either a selected or a random group of persons for the purpose of getting information.

President (noun)
The highest executive officer of the United States.

Press (noun)
All the media and agencies that print, broadcast, or gather and transmit news, including newspapers,newsmagazines, radio and television news bureaus, and wire services.

Primary (noun)
A preliminary election in which voters of each party nominate candidates for office.

Public Office (noun)
An appointed or elected to a governmental post.

Recognition (noun)
The acknowledgment of achievement, service, merit, etc.

Recognize (verb)
To show appreciation of an achievement or service by some reward or public honor.

Responsible (adjective)
To be reliable or dependable.

Self-Assured (adjective)
To be self-confident.

Short Term Goals (adjective/noun)
The result or achievement toward which effort is directed, with immediate results in mind.

Solutions (noun)
The act of solving a problem or question.

Trailblazer (noun)
A pioneer in any field of endeavor.

Trustworthy (adjective)
Deserving of trust or confidence; dependable; reliable:

US Senate (noun)
The upper house of the legislature of the United States, consisting of 2 members from each of the 50 states.

United States (noun)
A republic in the North Western Hemisphere comprising 48 conterminous states, the District of Columbia, and Alaska in North America, and Hawaii in the North Pacific.

Volunteer (noun)
A person who performs a service willingly and without pay.

Volunteer Base (noun)
A group of volunteers that are devoted to a certain cause or candidate.

White House (noun)
Also called the Executive Mansion. the official residence of the President of the United States, in Washington, D.C. which is a large, two-story, freestone building painted white.
